  24.  Class 1 specified the protocal between the computer and
  25. the modem so that the computer could manage FAX communications.
  26. Class 2 ( not a standard ) and Class2.0 include specifications
  27. for more than just the minimum. Many of the commands have been
  28. changed so that even to do the same level requires different
  29. command compatabilities. Class 2.0 specifies a lot of optional
  30. features. This means that if the modem manufacture should
  31. put this feature into their modem, Class 2.0 specifies how it will
  32. work with the computer. All of these options for Class 2.0 are
  33. just that options. Most low end ( less than $500 ) modems
  34. don't do anything more than minimum command recognition and
  35. don't implement any of the neat options.
  36.  Lastly but not least, Class 2.0 also off loads much of the
  37. call progress to the modem. In Class 1 the computer
  38. manages most of the call progress, meaning that the quality
  39. of the computers software has a lot to do with the ability
  40. to connect with a lot of FAX machines. In Class 2.0 the
  41. computer doesn't have access to this lower level and depends
  42. on the quality of the modems software.
  43.  Unless the modem came with a specific feature, related to
  44. one of the optional Class 2.0 features, I would say to
  45. stick with a Class 1 FAX modem. The performance differences
  46. between the two for most applications are small.
